Safety information for walkers
Correct Clothing and equipment
The weather in the Tarn can be very variable and change very quickly so it is important to have the correct clothes for the conditions.
In winter adequate warm clothes in layers is a good idea as well as wet weather gear as the conditions can deteriorate very quickly.
In summer it can get extremely hot so you should carry plenty of water, wear hats and sunscreen to protect you from the direct sun and heat. Storms are commonplace so carry light weight wet weather gear.
Appropriate footwear for walking on and off road and walking poles for steep climbs and slippery descents are recommended
Walking on roads.
In France walkers should walk on the left-hand side of the road and keep to single file on the busier roads. The only exception to this is if the road conditions make it safer to change sides. The front and back markers of the group should always be insight of each other and regroup where appropriate so that the group remain together
Dogs
Those bringing along dogs should always keep them on a lead as we regularly walk past working farms and fields with animals. Dog owners should be aware of the feelings of others and ensure their dog is not a nuisance
First Aid
A basic kit is carried on our walks by either the walk organiser or a member of the committee. It contains basic first aid supplies as well as an instruction sheet and guidelines for what to do in the event of a medical emergency
Safety Briefing
At the start of the walk the walk organiser should give a brief outline of the likely risks or hazards and to remind walkers of the road code
Medical Certificate Regulations from September 2017
From the beginning of September 2017, new regulations are being introduced by the FFRP with regards to medical certificates. The FFRP is the national association to which our club is affiliated and which provides our insurance.
A summary of the changes is set out below applicable from September 2017:
All members need a medical certificate every 3 years
For existing club members, there is a simple self- certification medical questionnaire to be completed anually during the medical certificate period, (regardless of age)
You sign the questionnaire and hand it to the club committee
If your answer to the questions is “no” then no other action is required
If however you answer “yes” to any of the questions then it is necessary to have a medical certificate
New members will need a medical certificate when they join which will last for 3 years, but will also need to complete the annual questionnaire in the same way as other members.
A copy of the questionnaire is available at https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/eli/arrete/2017/4/20/VJSV1712186A/jo/texte
